Alibaba Unveils Advanced AI Model Qwen 2.5-Max Amid Rising Competition with DeepSeek

Beijing, China – Alibaba has announced the launch of its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, Qwen 2.5-Max, claiming it surpasses key competitors, including DeepSeek’s V3 model. The release marks another milestone in China’s rapidly advancing AI sector, where companies are racing to develop cutting-edge models despite challenges such as U.S. chip export restrictions.

According to Alibaba Cloud, the tech giant’s cloud computing and AI division, Qwen 2.5-Max outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Meta’s Llama-3.1-405B in benchmark tests such as Arena-Hard and LiveBench. Its performance was also reported to be on par with Claude-3.5-Sonnet, the latest AI model from U.S.-based startup Anthropic. Qwen 2.5-Max is now available for public access via Qwen Chat, Alibaba’s AI-powered chatbot interface.

The announcement comes shortly after DeepSeek introduced its R1 reasoning model, which has gained attention for its capabilities rivaling major AI systems developed by firms like OpenAI and Meta. DeepSeek’s rapid progress has fueled investment in China’s AI industry, as domestic companies strive to compete on a global scale.

Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5-Max belongs to its Tongyi Qianwen large language model series and is available in multiple versions, ranging from 3 billion to 72 billion parameters. The company’s flagship model, Qwen2.5-VL-72B-Instruct, is accessible through Qwen Chat, while the full Qwen2.5-VL series has been made available on open-source platforms, including Hugging Face and Alibaba’s own ModelScope.

The intense competition between DeepSeek and Alibaba highlights China’s ambitions to lead in AI innovation. With an increasing focus on commercial AI applications, these advancements are not only shaping China’s tech landscape but also influencing global markets, as evidenced by stock fluctuations in AI-related companies like Nvidia.
