LOS ANGELES – July 10, 2025 — A large-scale tunnel project in the Wilmington area of Los Angeles suffered a partial collapse Wednesday night, trapping dozens of workers more than five miles underground. Thanks to a rapid and skillful emergency response, all 31 trapped individuals were safely rescued without injuries.

⚠️ Tunnel Cave-In Triggers Emergency Response

The collapse occurred just after 8:00 p.m. beneath a stretch of the massive wastewater tunnel system currently under construction. The incident left construction workers stranded on the far side of a roughly 15-foot wall of fallen dirt and debris, deep within a confined portion of the subterranean passageway.

🚒 Crews Mobilize for High-Risk Underground Rescue

The Los Angeles Fire Department, supported by specialized urban search and rescue units, quickly deployed more than 100 personnel to the scene. With only one viable escape path available, the workers were guided back through over five miles of tunnel, using transport vehicles and walking over unstable terrain to reach safety.

🎙️ Officials Praise Coordination, Call Outcome “A Miracle”

“This could’ve ended in tragedy,” said Mayor Karen Bass, praising the workers and first responders as “heroes.” Emergency officials described the scenario as “extremely dangerous,” noting that the group was located at one of the farthest points from any surface exit.

Robert Ferrante, the lead engineer overseeing the wastewater project, emphasized how serious the conditions were: “There was only one way out, and that way had to hold.”

🏗️ What Caused the Collapse?

While the exact cause is still under investigation, engineers suspect shifting soil or pressure failure may have triggered the sudden cave-in. Until a full structural analysis is completed, all work on the tunnel project is on hold, pending safety reviews and engineering reevaluations.

The tunnel is part of a long-term infrastructure initiative designed to modernize LA’s aging sewer systems and improve sustainability—but Wednesday’s close call highlights the high risks involved in deep, high-pressure tunneling projects
