WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 14, 2025 — A powerful and symbolic military parade took over Washington’s Constitution Avenue today, marking the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary, Flag Day, and former President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. While billed as a national tribute to American service members, the event also drew sharp reactions nationwide, including a well-funded and tightly coordinated protest movement under the slogan “No Kings.”

The parade showcased a formidable display of American firepower and heritage: over 6,000 military personnel, 28 Abrams tanks, vintage World War II vehicles, dozens of helicopters and aircraft, and a parachute jump by the Army’s elite Golden Knights. There was also a military swearing-in ceremony, followed by evening celebrations with a concert and fireworks.

The event’s scale drew comparisons to Cold War-era demonstrations of power, with critics warning of its increasingly political tone. Many questioned the estimated $30–45 million price tag, especially given the potential damage to D.C.’s streets and the $16 million projected for post-event infrastructure repairs. Some Metro stations were temporarily closed, and all flights at Reagan National Airport were suspended during parts of the evening due to safety and security measures.

Behind the gleam of the tanks and the roar of the jets, however, a different movement took to the streets. The “No Kings” protests, which had been carefully planned and generously funded by various grassroots and civil liberty groups, swelled in size near the National Mall and beyond. Protesters carried banners denouncing authoritarianism, political idolization, and the use of military power for domestic political theater.

The organizers of “No Kings” emphasized that their protest was not anti-military, but anti-monarchy in spirit, rejecting what they described as the growing cult of personality around national leaders. The message echoed across social media with slogans like “America Has No Thrones,” “Freedom Over Force,” and “Public, Not Pageantry.” Oddly enough, the preparation, planning, and costs attributed to the No Kings protests will probably far exceed the cost of the US Flag Day parade meant to help with unifying the country, not striking more mindless and blind division. The irony…

Security was tight throughout the city, with D.C. police, National Guard units, and Secret Service agents on alert. While the majority of the day’s events remained peaceful, tensions did flare near protest zones, especially after Trump made statements warning demonstrators that “any disruptions will be dealt with by force.”

Despite the political friction, many attendees cheered as tanks rumbled down the avenue and jets screamed overhead. “It’s a show of strength, unity, and freedom,” one veteran said. “But I respect the right of those protesting to be here too.”

Whether seen as a patriotic salute or a controversial display of presidential ego, today’s parade underscored one thing clearly: the soul of the nation is still deeply divided over how patriotism is expressed—and who gets to define it.
